"Adam?"
Betty simply nodded her head. It didn't seem possible for him to call her, even after he dumped her for his new girlfriend.
" I know he was your original love, Betty."
"Yeah. But's it's not easy to return to someone who dumped you in two weeks."
"Ouch."
"So, Ron. What did you want to talk to me about again?"
"Well, I just wanted to ask you..and thanks to Betty and Jug, I believe I finally made my decision."
"Which is?"
"Would you like to go steady with me?"
Archie's mouth almost dropped.
"Would I?! But what about..."
"I'll take care of Daddy later. Please, Archiekins?"
Jughead and Betty leaned foward in anticipation.
"I'd love to."
The whole table seemed to go up into an uproar...until the group was met with blank stares from the crowd. They quieted down and continued their conversation.
"Well, what about you two?"
"Ron! Not so loud!"
"She does have a big mouth, doesn't she?"
"Jughead!"
"Guys, guys."
Veronica licked out her tongue.
"Like I was saying..."
"We're not sure just yet..."
"Wha?"
"But you guys seem so..so.."
"Yeah, but Jug told me he still wasn't sure."
"Hmph."
"Back to Tyrone..."
"I really don't want to discuss him right now."
"Okay, okay. Later."
"Yeah, definitely later."
Jughead sighed. Something felt wrong.
Something...
"How do I get into these things? Just months ago, Betty was just a friend...a good friend. I kept the girl's encouragement going, just trying her to get with Archie every step of the way. Then the last time Veronica intervened...and everything went to heck from there...almost. Betty and I started to gain a relationship from that point. Then, everything was just in a whirlwind. Archie and I almost ending that friendship, Veronica advancing towards me...then everything calmed down. Then Adam... and it seems to me that because Adam has called...just a phone call, a whole lot of mess is about to come up. I just know it."
"Jughead, are you talking to yourself?"
He almost cringed, not realizing that someone was listening outside his bedroom door, that someone being his mother.
"Jughead, is something wrong?"
"Mom, uh...*sigh*..you haven't heard, have you?"
She simply shook her head, the expression on her face completely clueless. He went on to explain the whole situation.
"Why didn't you tell me about this?"
He paused.
"I really don't know..."
"Summer is getting closer and closer to end, Bets."
"Yeah. Time goes too darn fast."
"Then next year, it all ends."
"What do you mean, Ronnie?"
The girls are on the Lodge balcony, watching the summer sun set and make way for nightfall.
"Betty, we're going to be seniors next year. After that, we move on."
The thought of graduating made Betty excited and scared at the same time. She sighed. Moving on. It seems so far away now...
Knock! Knock!
"Excuse me, I'm looking for Betty Cooper, Smithers."
"Oh. She's up on the balcony with Miss Lodge."
"Thank you and you don't have to announce my arrival."
On the balcony, the girls continued chatting, oblivious to the situation about to befall them. Veronica turned her head and her smile faded. Standing behind them was Adam. Betty imediately frowned at seeing him.
"I thought I told you that my heart was already taken."
"Oh, c'mon, Betty. You know you're playing 'hard to get.' Now, forget about Archie and come back to me."
"Archie isn't mine anymore."
"Oh, so that 'another' was supposed to be Reggie, right?"
"Absolutely not."
"The other option that I have is me...or is it that retarded Jughead Jones?"
"He's not a retard!"
Tyrone's expression quickly switched to frustration.
"Wha? Don't tell me you have something going on with this guy."
"Maybe I do. Maybe I don't."
"Betty, stop playing."
He immediately grabbed her. Veronica gasped.
"Now, give me a kiss..."
"Oh, I'll give you a kiss, alright..."
WHAP! That sound was of Betty slapping Adam right across the face. He shrank back, almost dismayed at the fact that Betty had fallen for Jughead. She could see that he wasn't taking it well.
"What's it gonna take for you to come back?"
"Absolutely nothing!"
"Well, that's what I'm not gonna make sure of, Elizabeth Cooper!"
"Shut up, you piece of s-!"
Just before she finished her sentence, Veronica covered her mouth.
"Don't you even make one mention of that word, Betty!"
"Just get him the heck out of here!"
"She won't be seeing me for a few days, anyway...or will she?"
He left out of the Lodge Mansion with only one thought in mind. Betty started crying. She suddenly stopped, starting to grasp the meaning of Adam said.
"Ron!"
"Betty, what is it?"
"Oh, no! Why did I have to mention his name? Why me?! Why can't I keep my big mouth shut?!"
"Who? Betty, who...oh, no. He can't be..."
Betty just shook her head.
